Movie Review: Soorarai Pottru!

Assalamualaikum my dear reader friends!!

Today I've made up my mind to emerge with my version of observations on this OTT superhit Soorarai Pottru... The movie had been making quite an impressive ramp walk even before it was released on the silver screen...

This movie about an angry young man namely "Nedumaaran" (Soorya) is more about flying ambitions than just a caricature of Rowthiram! The movie has got all the ingredients of what is synonymous to be 'Mani Ratnam' to us... I was wonder struck later to discover that this phenomenal product is the making of a director-screenplay writer, Sudha Kongara Prasad,  who used to be once an associate director with Mani Ratnam. Hats off to Sudha for making such a spellbinding entertainer!!

Nedumaaran is an epitome of characters from Mani Ratnam movies like Guru, Yuva, etc. On the other hand, "Bommi" (Aparna Balamurali) reminds me of many 90's female actors like Madhubala, Shobana, and even Jyothika, at times. I so loved their jodi, that expresses a chemistry of a love-passion mash-up.

Rainy village, occasional hartals, mind-blowing one-liners, brilliant silhouettes, 'Bharathi kanda pudhumai penn' as the female lead, caramelized complexions, dusky darkness in the background, and a fast/fastidious dialogue delivery make the movie a rich source of happiness to the Tamil millennials and the fans of Mani Ratnam especially. Maaran who is in pursuit of his dream to bring in quality airline travel in a cheaper price, is dissected and almost ruined by a wealthy competitor namely "Paresh" (Paresh Rawal). In this challenging journey, Maaran meets and marries Bommi who has a goal to run a successful bakery in her town. As their aspirations, plights, fortunes, misfortunes, and even adventures sync, they make a lovely pair that touches the spirit of many hardworking and struggling young couples, who can easily relate themselves to the characters, in this COVID driven times.

In addition, we witness a decoction of Tamil culture blended with the angst of 'otherness' in this blockbuster, which was least portrayed so boldly in recent times. Nevertheless, Soorya has done an amazing performance through the role of Nedumaaran by justifying his character of being--a son, a lover, a passionate young Tamilian, and a youngster with a patriotic zeal in his demeanor. But what troubles me is the episodic nature of the screenplay, which at times fails to explain the moment. We are quite shuffled back and forth between flashbacks and the present. Especially understanding the climax was a little frustrating, to be honest, because of this tiny flaw.

And one also wonders why would the breach between Indians be so magnified in this manner. The bifurcation of North Indian and South Indian people should be rethought by Indian film directors. The mental partition is becoming quite evident with every upcoming Tamil movie nowadays. It has become a comfort zone or we can say a crowd puller, which yields media a bonus in the box-office I suppose.

On the whole, the movie is picture perfect, flawless, immaculate, and is an exceptional piece of art. Soorarai Pottru is definitely a landmark of the year 2020 on the banners of Kollywood celluloid. Plaudits and a hearty congratulations to the crew that has made the movie a grand success by putting it on wheels during the Deepawali holidays. Indeed, OTT platform is too small a space to contain its majesty! Still, the flip side is that at least the movie got the respect, response, and reach that it deserves... I think Sudha must be awarded for her mighty efforts in the making of this awesome movie!

Well.. well.. Rasheeda recommends you to grab your phone, login to Amazon prime immediately to watch the movie!! Never miss the show, as we may never know how things may turn up, and end the fun of watching it tomorrow!!
